Giants Predicted to Commit Yet Another Glaring Mistake cover image

The New York Giants are being predicted to make another major blunder.

The New York Giants haven't been able to help themselves in terms of making critical mistakes over the last decade-plus. It's why they have made just two playoff appearances since 2012 and have cycled through coaches like water ever since Tom Coughlin's departure.

We saw another example of this after the 2025 regular season concluded, when the Giants revealed that Joe Schoen would be back at general manager next year.

So it's only natural to expect New York to also blow its first-round draft pick, right?

Thanks to winning their last two games of the season, the Giants fell to fifth overall in the NFL Draft and may very well have to make the pick. Trading down may prove difficult.

Mark Schofield of SB Nation recently ran a mock draft, and he has Big Blue making what many would consider to be a colossal mistake in Round 1: selecting Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson.

"Jordyn Tyson has endured some injuries, but can stretch defenses vertically and poses problems at all levels of the field," Schofield wrote. "Pairing him with a healthy Malik Nabers is an instant upgrade for the Giants offense."

Well, there are a couple of problems here.

First of all, Schofield has Ohio State's Carnell Tate going sixth to the Cleveland Browns when it seems fairly evident that Tate is the superior prospect. So if the Giants were going to select a wide receiver, why not just roll with Tate?

Second, New York shouldn't be selecting a receiver in the first round.

Yes, I understand the temptation to provide Jaxson Dart with more help, but Nabers is coming back next season, and the G-Men could always just re-sign Wan'Dale Robinson.

With the Giants having such glaring needs at defensive tackle, cornerback and offensive line, going with a wide receiver in the first round for the second time in three years feels like a pretty grave misstep.

Plus, this NFL Draft class is very deep at the wide receiver position. New York can always circle back around and take a pass-catcher a bit later, especially if it is able to pick up some extra draft capital somehow.

This isn't necessarily an indictment on Tyson as a player. It's more that a.) Tate is better, and b.) the Giants have other far more pressing holes to fill.
