Matthew Schmidt and Dylan Feltovich of New York Giants Roundtable discuss the Giants' Week 9 loss to the San Francisco 49ers as well as the NFL trade deadline.
The New York Giants lost their third straight game on Sunday, falling to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 34-24 to drop to 2-7 on the season.
The Giants were missing a handful of key contributors in the contest, but it doesn't change the fact that the mostly lifeless performance was just the latest black eye on the Brian Daboll-Joe Schoen regime in New York.
So, what does the loss mean for the Giants going forward, and will it affect their trade deadline plans? Matthew Schmidt and Dylan Feltovich discussed that and more in the third episode of the Giants Roundtable podcast.
The topics are as follows:
Jaxson Dart was one of the few bright spots in New York's Week 9 loss. He wasn't outstanding, but he was solid, and he is the primary reason for excitement for Big Blue for 2026 and beyond. However, Dart continues to take big hits because of his refusal to slide. How much of an injury risk is there to Dart right now, and is the young quarterback potentially shortening his career?
What exactly is going on with the defense? The Giants' defense was supposed to be a strength heading into 2025, specifically because of the pass rush. But outside of Brian Burns, there hasn't been much of one, and New York's secondary has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. What's the problem here? Is it defensive coordinator Shane Bowen? Or maybe the Giants' defense just isn't as talented as we all initially thought?
With Cam Skattebo out for the season, how will New York proceed with its backfield moving forward? Devin Singletary actually got more carries than Tyrone Tracy against the 49ers, which seemed odd considering that Tracy was the No. 1 running back last year. Maybe the Giants will consider adding another halfback at the trade deadline?
On that subject, what will New York do before the trade deadline? Will it try to snag a wide receiver? Will it sell off some pieces? Or are Schoen and Daboll going to mail it in considering they both seem likely to lose their jobs after the season? Why would Schoen actually sell off any key players for draft picks when he might not even be around to utilize said picks?
The Giants will face the Chicago Bears in Week 10. Does New York stand any chance in this game, especially with the Bears' offense appearing to find its groove? Chicago has a lot of weapons in the aerial attack, and New York's secondary is banged up right now. Even when healthy, it isn't very good, so Caleb Williams could be in for another big day. Can the Giants find a way to upset the Bears on the road?
All that and more on the Giants Roundtable podcast.
