Russell Wilson always says the right thing.

The Giants benched Russell Wilson for Jameis Winston on Wednesday, and to no one's surprise, Wilson said all the right things.

Jaxson Dart has a concussion, so he won't play against the Packers. Most people thought Wilson would start this week, but Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka is going with Winston.

Wilson, one of the most professional players in NFL history, wanted to play this week, but he's happy for Winston.

"Obviously, I want to play, but Jameis has worked his butt off to give him a great opportunity," Wilson said. "He's a guy that's played in this league for a long time and he's one of my closest friends."

Wilson has appeared in six games this season. He's thrown for 831 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. The 10-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Giants in the offseason after playing for the Steelers last season.

A one-time Super Bowl champion with the Seahawks, Wilson becomes a free agent this offseason. He probably won't be back with the Giants next season and many people believe the Ohio native should retire from the NFL.

However, Wilson told reporters that he still believes he'll be a starter in the NFL again.

If Winston gets hurt against the Packers, Wilson will enter the game.

The Giants are 2-8. They will miss the playoffs again this season. They fired head coach Brian Daboll this week.

Winston hasn't played yet this season.  The 31-year-old Winston played for the Browns last season. He threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Earlier this month, Winston told ESPN that he wanted to remain with the Giants for several reasons.

"When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team," Winston said. "I don't care what the record is, I don't care what the circumstances, situation or facts is, I always say what I want for myself, I want for everyone. I'm a solutions-oriented guy, so I want to be a part of the solution. I don't just want to run away when things get bad."
