Giants Second-Year Tight End Emerging as Jaxson Dart’s Top Target cover image

New York Giants QB Jaxson Dart has found his favorite target in his first two starts.

The New York Giants made the decision to bench Russell Wilson in favor of their first-round rookie Jaxson Dart ahead of their Week 4 game. Dart hasn't been perfect, but he has shown some promise through his first two starts.

He led the Giants to an upset win over the Los Angeles Chargers in his first career start, but fell to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Against the Chargers, Dart completed 65 percent of his passes for 111 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions. He also rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown. He followed that up by completing 65 percent of his passes for 202 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions against the Saints. Dart added 55 yards on the ground.

Through his first two games, Dart has already found his favorite target. While Malik Nabers was expected to be and likely will be his go-to target long-term, his torn ACL will keep him out for the season.

In the meantime, second-year tight end Theo Johnson has stepped into that role. Dart has thrown three touchdowns in his NFL career, and all three have been to Johnson.

The 24-year-old tight end hauled in three receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown in Week 4 and six receptions for 33 yards and two touchdowns in Week 5.

The 2024 fourth-round pick is becoming a true red zone weapon for New York and establishing himself as a core piece of their young offense alongside Dart, Nabers, and Cam Skattebo.

Johnson was tied for the most targets (7) with Skattebo and Wandale Robinson in the Week 5 loss to the Saints.

In his rookie season, Johnson had 29 receptions for 331 yards and a touchdown. He has already tripled his touchdown production and is on pace to set career-highs in receptions and yards.

Although the Giants are unlikely to make a playoff push, it's important to see the development of their young talent. As the season progresses, Dart and Johnson will look to continue building their connection that could be dynamic for years to come.
