The New York Giants have nabbed a Big Ten star with the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft.
The New York Giants pulled off an absolute stunner with the No. 5 overall pick in the NFL Draft, selecting Ohio State Buckeyes edge rusher Arvell Reese.
This makes the second straight year the Giants took an edge with a top-five selection, as they nabbed Penn State star Abdul Carter last spring.
Reese racked up 69 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks during his final season at Ohio State in 2025.
The 20-year-old arrived at Columbus in 2023 and barely saw the field in Year 1. He then registered 43 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a half of a sack in 2024.
Reese was viewed by many as the best overall athlete in this draft class, and the fact that he slipped to the fifth overall pick was actually a bit of a shocker.
But is it as shocking as New York taking him? Perhaps not.
The Giants now have four prominent edge rushers on their roster in Reese, Carter, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason, and now that Big Blue added Reese, it may very well move Thibodeaux.
There were plenty of other areas of need for the Giants to address at No. 5, but clearly, they felt there weren't any players on the board worth taking at that spot other than Reese, who John Harbaugh clearly saw as best player available.
Reese wowed with his athleticism at the Scouting Combine and also put together a fantastic Pro Day, so much so that some felt the New York Jets should take him ahead of Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey at No. 2.
Nevertheless, the Jets opted to go with the more proven sack artist with their top pick, leaving Reese for the Giants several picks later.
New York also owns the No. 10 overall selection and has massive needs at cornerback, defensive tackle, guard and wide receiver. The Giants have been linked to players like LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane and Arizona State receiver Jordyn Tyson, so it will be interesting to see if they take either player at 10 ... if either is available.
