The New York Giants have more needs than we may have initially anticipated.

The New York Giants aren't a bad football team. They're 3-2-1 and sitting atop the NFC East. They clearly have some impressive talent, and they're improved from last year.

But they aren't legitimately good yet.

The Giants are without their quarterback in Jaxson Dart and their top defensive player in Brian Burns, so yes; injuries have played a huge role.

However, there is also no question that New York isn't quite ready to take that next step just yet, and while the Giants remain playoff contenders, that's really only because their division is absolutely horrendous.

New York entered 2026 with two very glaring needs at cornerback and defensive tackle, and those areas still need to be addressed.

But after watching the team for the first six weeks of the season, the Giants might have even more holes than we initially anticipated.

Clearly, New York needs a No. 1 running back, because it doesn't have one on the roster. Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy are both good complementary pieces, but I think it's becoming evident that neither can be a bell cow.

Perhaps that's why the Giants were reportedly so interested in Jeremiyah Love in the lead up to the NFL Draft last spring.

New York also needs more wide receiver help.

Malik Nabers has been brilliant this season, but that's about it. Darnell Mooney has done next to nothing. Calvin Austin III is out with a torn ACL. Malachi Fields has looked good in brief spurts and I think he has a bright future, but he's just a rookie.

Having tight end Isaiah Likely certainly helps, because he's like a big wide receiver on the field. But the Giants absolutely must add more depth at the position.

Additionally, New York still needs to address the interior of its offensive line. Bryan Hudson seems like he could be an answer at center, but Jon Runyan Jr. has been a disaster at left guard. Why he was extended is beyond me. Francis Mauigoa has struggled at right guard, but I still have hope he can become a terrific player.

And this may sound crazy, but the Giants actually need help with their pass rush.

Now obviously, Burns being off the field is gigantic. He racked up 16.5 sacks last season, and offenses always have to account for him. But the fact that New York has just eight sacks through six games is inexcusable, with or without Burns.

Abdul Carter still isn't getting home. He has two sacks through six games, and in 23 games in total since entering the NFL as a rookie last year, he has totaled six sacks.

That is not acceptable from a No. 3 overall pick.

Kayvon Thibodeaux actually played a decent game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but he is still without a sack this season and hasn't posted a quarterback hit since Week 1. Yes, the same Thibodeaux who had 11.5 sacks back in 2023.

The Giants have made progress. There's no doubt about it. But their first six games have also exposed some other areas of weakness that must be repaired.
