Why would the New York Giants go in this direction?

Last year, the New York Giants didn't really need to select an edge rusher in the NFL Draft. They already had Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux, and they had just signed Chauncey Golston in free agency.

Nevertheless, in true best-player-available fashion, the Giants selected Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick.

Now, Thibodeaux is expendable as a result, and it seems like New York would absolutely pull the trigger on a trade if it receives a strong enough offer.

So there is no way the Giants would take another edge rusher in this year's draft, right?

Well, maybe not early, but Paul Schwartz of The New York Post does wonder if Big Blue could circle back around to nab one on Day 3, and he named Carter's former Penn State teammate, Dani Dennis-Sutton, as a possibility for the team.

"If GM Joe Schoen and the scouting department on Day 3 are high on someone such as Malachi Lawrence (UCF), Trey Moore (Texas), Dani Dennis-Sutton (Penn State) or George Gumbs Jr. (Florida), perhaps a match will be made," Schwartz wrote.

Dennis-Sutton is probably one of the more underrated players in this year's class.

The 22-year-old racked up 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks this past season, numbers that were nearly identical to his 2024 showing when he finished with 42 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

At least he's consistent.

Additionally, Dennis-Sutton stands 6-foot-6 and actually ranked No. 1 among edge rushers in NFL.com's athleticism core after his showing at the Scouting Combine.

So why exactly does Schwartz have Dennis-Sutton listed among players that the Giants could potentially snag on Day 3?

Well, Dennis-Sutton is not viewed as one of the most elite edge rushers in his group, largely because of how deep the position is this year. And while he is very athletic, he tends to play very stiff and upright, which overshadows his explosiveness.

That being said, Dennis-Sutton seems more likely to be a late Day 2 pick rather than someone who falls to Day 3, so it's doubtful that New York will get the opportunity to select him anyway.

Plus, the Giants have so many other needs that edge rusher — a position at which they are stocked to the brim — should not even be on their radar.

But if Dennis-Sutton is still somehow on the board when New York is on the clock at No. 105, it may prove difficult for the G-Men to pass on the Nittany Lions standout.
