The New York Giants could definitely stand to add another piece in NFL free agency.

The New York Giants plugged some holes in NFL free agency, but they could still afford to add some more pieces.

Yes, the Giants can always turn to the NFL Draft next month to repair their other needs, but they still have $21.1 million in cap room to bring in another veteran.

The one position that New York has completely failed to address in free agency has been defensive tackle, and this puzzles Dan Duggan of The Athletic.

"It’s shocking that the Giants haven’t made a single move on the defensive line," Duggan wrote. "The run defense has been an Achilles heel and they’ve done nothing to address that weakness up front."

Duggan is right. New York's run defense was atrocious in 2025, and Dexter Lawrence struggled mightily on the interior. Lawrence's difficulties were probably due to injury, but he still needs some help regardless.

"There are a few solid veteran options available, but the market has been thinning and prices haven’t been dropping," Duggan added. "The Giants need to pull the trigger on the signing of a vet (or two) with more reinforcements coming in the draft. DJ Reader and Calais Campbell stick out as the most attractive remaining free agents."

Campbell played for John Harbaugh in Baltimore between 2020 and 2022, so there is some familiarity there. You do have to wonder, though, if Campbell's price tag is a bit too high for the Giants.

Sure, New York has some money to spend, but let's keep in mind that the Giants need to keep some cash available for draft picks, and they also surely want to leave some room for potential midseason additions.

Reader is the less attractive option, but he should absolutely come cheaper and would still comprise a terrific pickup for Big Blue.

Perhaps the Giants are leaning toward taking a defensive tackle within the first two rounds of the draft. Peter Woods, Caleb Banks, Lee Hunter, Kayden McDonald and Darrell Jackson are all potential candidates, and New York would be fortunate to come away with any of them.

If that's the plan and the Giants stick to it, then losing out on an interior defender in free agency wouldn't be so bad. But if New York doesn't make a veteran addition and chooses to ignore defensive tackle in the early stages of the draft, then we'll have a problem.
