The New York Giants might have a surprising area of strength on their roster.
All offseason long, fans and pundits have bemoaned the New York Giants' lack of elite talent at the defensive tackle position, especially after trading away Dexter Lawrence.
The interior defensive line has been cited as a top concern for the Giants over the course of the last four or five months, this even though cornerback has always been their most pressing area of weakness.
In fact, I think New York has done a very admirable job in the trenches.
The Giants signed DJ Reader and Shelby Harris in free agency. They selected Bobby Jamison-Travis in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. They just acquired CJ Okoye in a last-minute trade with the Baltimore Ravens that looks like an absolute steal.
Reader has long been one of the NFL's best run stoppers, an area that plagued New York in 2025. Harris is a dependable veteran. Jamison-Travis was an elite run-stuffer at Auburn. Okoye stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 365 pounds with incredible potential.
What am I missing here? What is the issue?
As far as I'm concerned, the Giants' defensive tackle room does not look half-bad. It could actually end up being ... dare I say it, a strength.
Lawrence was not good last season. I don't care what the PFF numbers say. Anyone who watched him could see that he was subpar. I definitely think he was playing hurt, but it's also possible that he is simply declining.
So I'm not on board with the idea that New York's defensive front is about to crumble simply because of the loss of Lawrence.
The Giants struggled mightily against the run last fall. Lawrence was culpable in that. Let's not sugarcoat it.
Now, New York has added some massive bodies that should absolutely improve the Giants' ability to stuff opposing rushing attacks, and that, in turn, will also help Big Blue's pass rush.
Okoye is the real X-factor here.
The 24-year-old just started playing football a few years ago, but he definitely displayed some clear ability in Baltimore last season. He is enormous, and he also possesses freakish athleticism for his size. He still needs some refinement, but I could see a world in which the international pathway talent ends up becoming a fixture on the interior for New York.
Reader has always been good, and ask any Cleveland Browns fan about how underrated Harris actually is. We also can't forget Darius Alexander, who struggled during his rookie campaign and produced mixed results this summer, but could comprise a potential breakout player.
Then there is Jamison-Travis, who is still very raw, but could ultimately factor into the Giants' defensive line rotation at some point in 2026.
Count me among the very few who is actually more impressed with New York's defensive tackle room than concerned.
