The opening week of the NFL season has arrived and Brian Daboll continues to play it close to the vest in certain areas.
This time, it is the backup quarterback situation.
While Daboll did not share updates on position battles at right tackle and cornerback, he also did not answer who would be the No. 2 quarterback behind Russell Wilson in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders. Daboll went as far as to say Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart will split reps during practice.
"We'll have a walkthrough today and focus on today and then as the week goes on, the backup quarterbacks will get a lot of reps on the look teams and then we'll decide what we want to do on some of the periods," Daboll said to the media on Monday.
Dart took the preseason by storm after being selected with the 25th pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Ole Miss product went 32-for-47 for 372 yards and four total touchdowns in three games. With the addition of both Wilson and Winston in the offseason, it is clear that the Giants did not plan on rushing along their rookie quarterback.
Could that change after seeing how Dart performed in the preseason? Daboll will not share that answer until Sunday.
"Yeah, any roster decisions based on who's going to be in the backup or who this player is going to be, we'll have that out there on Sunday," Daboll said.
Last season, New York typically worked the second-string quarterback in with the scout team while the third option would not get reps anywhere. This put Tommy DeVito, who was recently released by the team, in a difficult position when he was thrust into action. While it remains unclear how the depth chart will look, the Giants will make sure all three quarterbacks are ready for game action.
The Giants will open the season on Sunday on the road against the Commanders before another road division matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. New York will return home on Sept. 21 for the opener at MetLift Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The schedule is among the most-difficult in the league this season but the Giants remained focused on what's in front of them.
"I mean our focus is solely on this week on Washington and the players and their schemes," Daboll said. "That's unique about the first game of the season. You don't know, you can study all the tape you want to study from the previous year schematically, the players, that helps quite a bit, strengths and weaknesses. But, you don't know how they're going to play or what they're going to do different."
