New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo won't like to hear this.

The New York Giants own the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft this April, and there are plenty of directions in which they can proceed.

But I'm not sure anyone is expecting them to select a running back with their top draft choice.

Nevertheless, the Giants are apparently considering it, as Charlie Campbell of Walter Football has reported that New York is weighing the possibility of selecting Notre Dame Fighting Irish star Jeremiyah Love at No. 5 overall.

Let me preface this by saying that Love is a fantastic player and may very well be one of the best talents in this year's draft class. He is tremendous. But why on earth would the Giants take a halfback with their first-round draft pick?

New York already has Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy in the backfield, and while Love is certainly a superior talent to both, the Giants have so many prominent needs elsewhere on the roster that taking a running back wouldn't make sense.

Now, it is entirely possible that New York's supposed interest in Love could indicate that the team is a bit worried about Skattebo's health.

Remember: the bruising back suffered a gruesome ankle injury midway through the 2025 campaign. He has made excellent progress in his recovery, but there is certainly reason to wonder if he'll ever be the same again.

Even still, it just doesn't jive for the Big Blue to nab a halfback on Day 1 in the team's current position.

The Giants have needs at defensive tackle, cornerback, wide receiver and offensive line. You could argue linebacker and safety, too, which is why New York has been connected to Ohio State standouts Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs.

The Giants really don't have to add a running back right now, and if they really feel the need to draft one, there should be plenty of good ones available in the later rounds.

Again, Love is a stud, but look how bad the Las Vegas Raiders now look for taking Ashton Jeanty — who was widely viewed as a generational talent last spring — sixth overall last April. Do the Giants really want to follow that blueprint?

Perhaps this is all a smokescreen on the part of the G-Men, or maybe the report is false. Hopefully it's one of those two things, because a running back is not the avenue New York should be choosing in the NFL Draft. At least not that early.
