It's hard not to see the similarities between Malachi Fields and this New York Giants legend.

When the New York Giants traded up to land wide receiver Malachi Fields in the third round of the NFL Draft back in April, the vast majority of Giants fans approved.

As they should.

Fields was arguably one of the most underrated receivers in this draft class and was coming off of an impressive 2025 campaign at Notre Dame in which he caught 36 passes for 630 yards and five touchdowns. That was good for a robust average of 17.5 yards per catch.

He also flashed terrific skill in his four preceding seasons at Virginia, posting back-to-back 800-yard showings in 2023 and 2024.

However, there were some who had some concerns about Fields heading into the draft. Why? Because he ran a 4.59 in the 40-yard dash, and some questioned his overall production on the collegiate level.

On the flip side, Fields is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound monster with tremendous leaping ability and a knack for making remarkable catches, using his frame and freakish athleticism to come down with contested balls.

Does that sound similar to another Giants legend? Because if you thought of Plaxico Burress, you wouldn't be the only one.

Burress was drafted eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2000, so it wasn't like he was a third-round selection. But his lack of straight-line speed and spotty collegiate numbers were definitely tabbed as red flags.

But at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Burress was able to use his massive frame to develop into one of the better X-receivers of his day, ultimately landing with New York in 2005 and catching the game-winning touchdown of the Giants' legendary Super Bowl victory over the undefeated New England Patriots two years later.

I'm not necessarily saying that Fields is going to become Burress, but that you can't help but notice the parallels.

A lot of the criticisms we are hearing about Fields are the same things people said about Burress 20-plus years ago. And look where Burress ended up.

The fact of the matter is that Big Blue desperately needed an X-receiver. We know how fantastic Malik Nabers is when healthy, and he is a No. 1. But he stands six feet tall. The Giants haven't had a reliable big-bodied pass-catcher at wide receiver for eons, and Fields could ultimately fill that role.

Whether or not Fields gets significant playing time in Year 1 will obviously depend on how the wide receiver room shakes out, but at the very least, I expect the 22-year-old to make a significant impact as soon as his sophomore campaign.

And who knows? Maybe one day in the not-too-distant future, Jaxson Dart and Fields will re-enact what Eli Manning and Burress achieved two decades ago.
