The New York Giants have received a big update before the NFL trade deadline.
The New York Giants are sitting in first place in the NFC East heading into their bye week, owning a record of 4-2-1.
With the NFL trade deadline looming, the Giants are expected to be buyers, especially considering how weak the rest of their division is. They actually have a legitimate shot of winning it for the first time in 15 years.
Of course, New York still has plenty of holes it needs to fill in order to sustain its success, and NFL insider Jordan Schultz has just revealed what the Giants are searching for between now and Nov. 10: help at running back and defensive tackle.
New York cut Najee Harris after Week 6, and Tyrone Tracy was just placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury. That leaves Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary as the Giants' only two halfbacks, which is a problem.
As far as defensive tackle is concerned, DJ Reader has been brilliant throughout his debut campaign in the Big Apple, but New York doesn't really have any reliable answers next to him.
Sixth-round rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis absolutely showed promise during the Giants' win over the Houston Texans last Sunday, but John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson probably aren't putting in all of their chips on a Day 3 pick just yet.
New York acquired 6-foot-6, 365-pound CJ Okoye just before the start of the regular season, but while he has a ton of potential, he is still very raw.
Then, there's second-year pro Darius Alexander, who continues to struggle.
The problem for the Giants is that they don't have a whole lot of draft capital at their disposal. They traded away their fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks this year, and they probably want to be careful when it comes to moving future draft choices.
Additionally, New York will likely be searching for trade targets who still have multiple years remaining on their contracts. Trading away more draft assets for a half-year rental wouldn't make much sense for a Giants team that, while improved, is clearly not a Super Bowl contender just yet.
New York will have to walk a delicate balance between getting better and also preserving its future, so it will be interesting to see how Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen approach the situation over these next couple of weeks.
The Giants are one-and-a-half games in front of the Dallas Cowboys for first place in the NFC East, and they defeated the Cowboys back in Week 1.
