The New York Giants should steer clear of this one particular star player.

The New York Giants will be looking to do some wheeling and dealing this offseason, as new head coach John Harbaugh will be aiming to put his own personal touches on the roster.

The Giants have some very obvious needs, and one of them is at wide receiver. Malik Nabers is coming off of a torn ACL, and Wan'Dale Robinson seems like a clear candidate to walk in free agency.

New York owns the No. 5 overall pick of the NFL Draft and has been routinely connected to Ohio State star Carnell Tate, but the Giants may also look to pick up a veteran receiver once the market opens next week.

On that note, one big-name option just surfaced for Big Blue: Stefon Diggs.

The New England Patriots will reportedly be releasing Diggs at the start of the new league year after the 32-year-old declined to take a pay cut.

Diggs will be free to join any team, and naturally, New York is being floated as a potential landing spot. But the Giants really should sit this one out.

Why? Well, there are multiple reasons.

First and foremost, Diggs is dealing with a pending legal issue that may or may not have played a role in the Patriots' decision to cut him. Yes, his cap hit was set to rise to $26.5 million in 2026, but for a team that just made the Super Bowl, New England was awfully quick on the trigger to part ways with the four-time Pro Bowler.

Especially after he just caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

That right there is an indication that the Pats simply did not want to deal with Diggs' legal problems. The Giants shouldn't, either.

Second, while Diggs is still a good player, he is clearly declining. Remember: he tore his ACL midway through 2024, and he was even showing signs of a downturn during his final season with the Buffalo Bills in 2023.

The fact that Diggs struggled so much in the playoffs this year is also a sign that he simply isn't that top guy any longer.

New York should be looking to add ascending talent; not players who are a couple of years away from not even being productive anymore.

And finally, Diggs has a bit of a reputation. He caused a bit of trouble during his time with the Minnesota Vikings, and he didn't appear to have the greatest relationship with Josh Allen in Buffalo.

The Giants shouldn't be taking that risk with Jaxson Dart, who is entering just his second season in the NFL. I understand Diggs seemed perfectly fine with Drake Maye in New England, but again, he has a history.

As tempting as it may be for New York to sign Diggs, the Giants should think better of it and explore safer options elsewhere.
