NFL Insider Links Giants to Defensive-Minded Coach cover image

It's still too early for the New York Giants to bring in another coach after they fired Brian Daboll, but one insider suggests that they're already planning for new potential coaches.

With the New York Giants in full transition mode, they need to figure out what’s next on the agenda.

They have a handful of games to determine whether interim head coach Mike Kafka is the guy moving forward – and it may not be a thought that’s out of the question.

Kafka is a coach that’s well respected around the league, and he nearly found himself a head coaching job, most notably with the Seattle Seahawks, before they went ahead and hired Mike Macdonald from the Baltimore Ravens.

But there are plenty of options available should the Giants opt to look outside the organization.

FOX Spots NFL Insider Jay Glazer reported that the Giants may look out west for a possible candidate.

"A name that's starting to pop up, Chris Shula, the guy who's the defensive coordinator for the Rams," Glazer said. "I'll tell you this, of all the coaches Sean McVay has kind of pushed along to be the next head coach, he's done more with Chris Shula than all of them combined. These two guys are best friends. They went to college together. But he lets him in on everything. He may not do that with everyone else, but he does that with Shula. He thinks he's going to be a star."

Shula has done a remarkable job building this defense and turning it into one of the best in the NFL. Los Angeles currently is second with 17.2 points per game allowed, third in takeaways per game, eighth in interception percentage and eighth in sacks per game.

We’ve seen the impact that a top-tier defensive mind can do for a team with Macdonald and the Seahawks. But even then, a team who had one of the most dynamic offenses in Seattle was shut down by Shula’s defense this past Sunday.

The Rams forced Sam Darnold to throw four interceptions, while not recording a touchdown – a feat that he’s done twice before while he was with the New York Jets.

Not only that, the addition of Shula would be greatly beneficial to the Giants after seeing how well he helped develop Jared Verse and Braden Fiske. Perhaps a guy like Abdul Carter would prosper from the tutelage of a defensive guru like Shula.

Kafka may be the guy moving forward, maybe he’s not. But it would be a disservice to the franchise to at least see if Shula is available.
