According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, John Harbaugh still hasn't signed his contract with the New York Giants.
A source told Schefter, though, that things are "heading in the right direction."
The Giants haven't made the playoffs since the 2022 season. That was the first year of the Brian Daboll era. Daboll was fired during the middle of this season.
It will be fascinating to see how Harbaugh does in his first season in New York in 2026, assuming a deal gets done. If the Giants mess this up, there is going to be an uproar in New York City.
The Giants went 4-13 this season. They finished with the worst record in the NFC East.
Harbaugh is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He went 180-113 in the regular season and 13-11 in the playoffs with the Baltimore Ravens.
Baltimore, led by Joe Flacco and Ray Lewis, won Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31.
The Giants have the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Their biggest needs are WR, OL, CB, LB and S, according to NFL.com.
Only time will tell how successful Jaxson Dart is under Harbaugh, who needs to hire the right OC for Dart.
An Ole Miss product, Dart finished his rookie season with 2,272 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, five interceptions, 487 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. For the first time in the post-Eli Manning era, the Giants appear to have a franchise QB.
However, Dart needs to be more careful moving forward when running the ball. He suffered multiple concussions this season.
Harbaugh worked well with Lamar Jackson, who won two MVPs under Harbaugh. Can Dart have similar success? Only time will tell. First things first: New York has to officially sign Harbaugh and not mess up contract negotiations.
