Report: Giants Have a List of Candidates for Head-Coaching Vacancy cover image

The New York Giants are linked to five guys.

According to NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the New York Giants have a list of candidates for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Giants, who fired Brian Daboll and named Mike Kafka the interim coach, have their eyes on five guys.

"The New York Giants have a list of candidates for their head-coaching vacancy," Russini wrote. "I'm told the names on it include Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak … and Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman.

"I also expect Freeman to garner interest from other NFL organizations. The 39-year-old has spent the past four years leading Notre Dame, taking the Irish to the national championship game last season. Last December, he agreed to a lucrative contract extension through 2030. And though he has never coached in the NFL, his leadership, people skills and ability to thrive in one of the most high-profile jobs in the country are what’s drawing the interest of general managers and owners."

The Giants have a promising young QB in Jaxson Dart and talented players on defense.

That's why New York general manager Joe Schoen thinks the Giants' open coaching job will be highly coveted.

"OK, you have a young quarterback," Schoen wrote. "He's shown that he's played at a pretty good level. We've got a No. 1 receiver who had a historical rookie season. They've got a left tackle. They've got a left guard. They've got a center coming back. They've got a young running back room. [Tight end] Theo Johnson was showing very good flashes this year. That side [of the] ball, there's some pieces in place to build around.

"Defensively, there's pass rush, there's Dexter Lawrence, there's some pieces in the secondary. So when you look at it individually, are there pieces? Yes, but we've got to come together collectively as a group, and there's 11 guys on the field that need to be doing the same thing. They need to be on the same page. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to do that. That starts with me. That's what we have to figure out. It's not just talent."

The Giants are 2-11. They will have a high pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

It will be fascinating to see who is coaching Dart next season. The rookie QB was close with Daboll.
