It looks like the New York Giants will have to trade Dexter Lawrence.

The New York Giants' contract talks with Dexter Lawrence have reached an impasse, per ESPN

The Giants have now engaged with teams about a potential trade for Lawrence and discussions will continue ahead of next week's NFL draft.

Lawrence has requested a trade because the Giants have been reluctant to alter his $20 million salary for 2026. The three-time Pro Bowler has two years left on his current contract.

Last season, Lawrence had the worst year of his career. He put up only 0.5 sacks, 14 solo tackles, four tackles for loss and eight QB hits.

In 109 games with the Giants, Lawrence has 30.5 sacks, 185 solo tackles, 40 tackles for loss and 103 QB hits. He's one of the top players in the league at his position and multiple teams have already contacted New York about trading for the veteran despite his subpar 2025 campaign.

"We've had good conversations with his representatives throughout the last five or six days," Giants GM Joe Schoen said. "Coach, [senior vice president of football operations and strategy] Dawn [Aponte], myself, we've all been in communication, trying to find some resolution.

"I'll echo what coach said last week: We'd like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we'll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We'll see. But conversations have been really good, they've been productive and we'll see what happens here down the road."

If the Giants give Lawrence a new contract, the DL will be back in New York. However, if a new deal isn't offered to Lawrence, he's likely gone.

"I'm always going to pick up the phone," Schoen said. "So if a team calls -- maybe not to the effect that Coach [Harbaugh] said last week that everybody is tradable -- but, no, that is my job as the general manager. If teams call, you take into account it's a case-by-case basis and what the compensation may be. That's my job to take into consideration what that looks like, what the compensation looks like, who the player is, how that affects the roster and then try to make the best decision off of that."

The Giants went just 4-13 last season. John Harbaugh is the new head coach.
