The New York Giants have reportedly signed a former AFC cornerback in free agency on Tuesday morning.

With the 2026 NFL Free Agency period now underway, the New York Giants have slowly begun to make moves this offseason to revamp the roster under newly-hired head coach John Harbaugh.

On Monday, general manager Joe Schoen signed multiple players from the free agency pool, including one of Harbaugh’s former players, tight end Isaiah Likely. In addition to Likely joining the organization for the foreseeable future, the Giants’ front office also managed to sign former Chicago Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, filling a massive hole on the defensive side of the ball.

Fortunately for the fanbase, these were not the only moves that New York planned on making this offseason.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Tuesday morning, the Giants have signed former Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Greg Newsome II to a one-year deal.

Newsome, a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has had an interesting career throughout his time in the NFL. Throughout his tenure with the Browns, the former Northwestern Wildcat showed plenty of promise as a perfect complementary piece to star cornerback Denzel Ward, recording 29 pass deflections and three interceptions.

However, Newsome was quickly traded to the Jaguars during the 2025 NFL season in exchange for Tyson Campbell. One of the primary reasons for his departure from Cleveland was the expiration of his contract, along with his lack of fit within the Browns’ defense. Newsome was featured as a slot and an outside cornerback for Cleveland, but Campbell’s style of play allowed him to be an outside cornerback that the Browns desperately needed in 2025.

In his 13 games with the Jaguars last season, Newsome struggled at times, allowing five touchdowns in his first nine games. Luckily for the 25-year-old, he still managed to tally one pass deflection and one interception towards the end of the year while allowing 22 receptions in his last seven games.

Looking at how Newsome fits into Harbaugh’s defense in 2026, it’s clear that the young defensive back will have a key role within the secondary. Former Giants’ star corner Cor’Dale Flott signed a massive deal with the Tennessee Titans on Monday, leaving an opening for Newsome to fill his role next season.
