It is hard to place a head coach on the hot seat after one week. But of course, each situation is different.

When a coach is in his fourth year and the arrows are not pointing that far up, and that same team fails to score a touchdown once again in a season-opener, the seat is as hot as can be.

The New York Giants suffered a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders to start the season. New York is the first team since the merger to not score a touchdown in three consecutive season openers. For an offensive head coach like Brian Daboll, this is an indictment.

As if the last two years has not been enough of a reason why Daboll is on the hot seat, let's look at Week 1 vs. Washington.

The Giants came into the season with a veteran quarterback in Russell Wilson and a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver in Malik Nabers. Daboll handed the play calling back over to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka but coming from an offensive background, the head coach has to be involved.

The Giants were gifted a first-and-goal at the one-yard line after a penalty by the defense on third down. The first play called was a gimmick play that was supposed to go to rookie left tackle Marcus Mbow. Washington sniffed it out and made a stop. Two plays later, the Giants settled for a field goal after six plays inside the seven-yard line.

New York was goal-to-go once again in the fourth quarter trailing, 21-6. The Commanders made another stop after four brutal plays by the Giants. The offensive line was completely overmatched and the run game could not generate consistent yards. Yes, the execution was poor but the schemes and game plans are as bad as it gets right now for the Giants.

New York has also lost multiple big names over the last four years. This is led by Saquon Barkley, who has turned into the top running back in the league in Philadelphia. Yes, the Eagles have one of the elite offensive lines in the NFL. The same can be said about Xavier McKinney and maybe now Daniel Jones. All situations might be better but again, an indictment on the head coach that the Giants have not been put in. abetter spot in four years.

Jones produced at a high level for the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1. Jones struggled over the last two years after leading the Giants to the postseason and receiving a contract extension in Daboll's rookie year. While Daboll gets credit for fixing Jones for one year, he does not receive the same criticism for his downfall, which needs to be mentioned.

Daboll began his tenure with a hard-nosed win against the Tennessee Titans on the road. That same year, the Giants found a way to win close games and this includes a postseason game in Minnesota. Since then, the team has gone backwards and there is no one to blame but the general manager and head coach.
