The New York Giants have lost yet another season opener and have now done something that has not been done since the merger.
New York kicked two field goal on the way to six points on Sunday afternoon. This marked the third consecutive opener where the team did not score a touchdown. After a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 1, many have become impatient and are calling for Jaxson Dart to start right away.
Right now, that is not the move to make and patience is key for the Giants.
On Monday, Brian Daboll announced that Russell Wilson will start in Week 2 vs. the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson went 17-for-37 for 168 yards against Washington. But it is only Week 1 and this is the reason to have patience.
First and foremost, the Giants are not in a position to win this year. They have the league's hardest schedule and flaws all over the offensive side of the ball. A poor offensive line was exposed in the season-opener. This led to Wilson being off target all afternoon and the run game being completely taken out of the game, which led to play-action going with it.
While many fans look at the quarterback following a loss, Wilson was not among the top reasons the Giants looked as bad as they did. Of course, he did not help the situation but few quarterbacks would be successful with no run game, behind a bad offensive line, and with this coaching staff.
Daboll handed play-calling duties back to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka this season and it crashed and burned right away. The offense was bland and could not find any explosive plays down the field.
When you add all of this together, why would you want to throw in a rookie quarterback who could be ruined by the situation?
Now, this is not to say that we should not see Dart all season but the time has not come. That could change in four weeks as the Giants have the Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Chargers on deck over the next three weeks. If the Giants are 0-4 heading to New Orleans in Week 5, there is a chance we will see Dart. If they can win a game or two, Wilson will continue to start.
Either way, the Giants made the right decision following a disastrous loss to begin the season. Right now, Wilson is the best option under center.
