The New York Giants' defense did not perform up to expectations this season.
While we can certainly place a fair amount of blame on former defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, we must be honest and admit that the Giants' defense was also pretty flawed from a personnel standpoint.
More specifically, New York's defensive front was severely lacking, particularly in terms of run defenders. Dexter Lawrence was clearly battling an injury all season long, but he didn't exactly have much help on the interior, either.
That's why the Giants absolutely need to add a run-stuffing defensive tackle this offseason, and they would probably be better off landing one in the NFL Draft.
While I think New York should ultimately take Clemson's Peter Woods with its top draft pick, the recent Malik Nabers news has unfortunately made it more likely that the Giants will select a wide receiver in the first round.
Knowing that, New York will have to circle back around to nab an interior defender a bit later, and one potential option for Big Blue could be Florida Gators defensive tackle Caleb Banks.

He actually returned to play the last couple of games of the campaign, but the injury is definitely something teams will monitor.
That may actually play out in the Giants' favor, though, as it could cause Banks to slip in the draft.
At 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds, Banks is a mountain of a man who not only excels in stopping the run, but also displayed serious potential as a pass rusher in 2024 when he registered 4.5 sacks.
Banks has even drawn comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs star Chris Jones, and it's also hard not to think of Calais Campbell when watching him.
The Detroit native possesses incredible athleticism and clearly has the potential to develop into a legitimate star on the professional level. Not only would he help the Giants' brutal run defense, but he would also further open up the pass rush, too.
Imagine how many pass-rushing lanes Brian Burns and Abdul Carter would have with both Lawrence and Banks in the middle? Having those two defensive tackles up front would make everyone's jobs easier.
Barring a free-agent signing, I am pretty positive New York will be taking an interior defensive lineman early in the NFL Draft. We'll see if Banks ends up being the guy.
