The New York Giants have been dealing with two major injuries ahead of Week 1.
Malik Nabers was held out of practice Friday as head coach Brian Daboll said they are “backing off” the star receiver as he deals with back tightness.
According to USA Today’s Art Stapleton, Daboll repeated multiple times that this should not impact his status for Week 1.
“He’ll be fine for the game,” Daboll said. “Back’s a little tight, but he’ll be all right.”
Left tackle Andrew Thomas will practice Friday after a planned day off on Thursday. This will go a long way in determining his status for the opening matchup against the Washington Commanders.
If Thomas is held out, James Hudson would likely be in line for the start at left tackle. Marcus Mbow would also be available as a swing tackle.
The new-look Giants’ offense will want its best weapon out there. Nabers finished with 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie. It is important to note that Nabers caught 19 passes against the Commanders with 10 coming in Week 2 in Landover.
The Commanders improved the secondary in a big way since that matchup, adding Marshon Lattimore in a trade and Trey Amos in the NFL Draft.
Outside of Nabers, the Giants will look for Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton to take the next step on the outside. This would provide necessary depth within the skill positions.
Nabers will look to get healthy for the start of the season and help get the Giants off on the right foot.
