The Non-Micah Parsons Defensive Key for Packers vs. Cowboys cover image

Attention will be on Micah Parsons heading into the Green Bay Packers' matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, but let's put some focus on defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt

The Green Bay Packers took defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt with the 28th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft because they believed they saw the future of their interior defensive line.

Wyatt was hit or miss over his first three seasons, but like with anything in Green Bay, there was a plan and place, and he was able to take his time. He played behind players like Kenny Clark, Jarran Reed and T.J. Slaton, but he seemingly always made an impact on the field.

Checking in at 6-foot-3, 304 pounds, Wyatt has the size to clog up the middle on defense but he's also one of those "quick twitch" athletes you hear so much about. That's why it was no surprise when he went from 1.5 sacks to 5.5 sacks between his rookie season and second season. He notched five sacks in 2024, and he's look great so far through three games in 2025.

According to head coach Matt LaFleur, Wyatt has consistently made the most of his opportunities.

“I think he’s been trending that way, even going back to last year,” LaFleur said of Wyatt, according to Heavy on NFL. “Certainly, he’s getting more opportunities now, and he’s taking advantage of those.”

Wyatt is getting real, legit opportunities now, but he must have looked good all offseason and in training camp, because the Packers were confident enough to trade Clark to Dallas alongside two first-round picks, with the return being star pass-rusher Micah Parsons.

Parsons is going to be the story this Sunday night as the Packers take on his old team, the Dallas Cowboys, in Week 4, but it's Wyatt who will be the Packers' defensive key in this game.

Why is that? Everything Dallas is going to try to do will likely be up the middle...right at Wyatt.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott will be playing without his favorite target, CeeDee Lamb, who is out for a few weeks with an injury.  He does have tight end Jake Ferguson and wideout George Pickens at his disposal, but you can bet there's going to be an emphasis on running the ball in order to slow down Parsons and the Packers' pass-rush.

The Cowboys do have a strong running back tandem in Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, and they're averaging 125 yards per game on the ground so far.

Wyatt will absolutely be tested up the middle.

Even when Prescott drops back to throw, though, you can also bet that there's going to be a ton of pass protection focus put on stopping Parsons and his rush-mate, Rashan Gary.

There's going to be a lot of attention on the edge of Green Bay's pass-rush, which could open up opportunities for Wyatt to get after Parsons. Keep in mind, he already has two sacks on the season, so he's rushing the passer well.

In general, Wyatt is playing well, so he's worth our attention in Week 4.

According to LaFleur, it's just a product of experience.

“I think it’s just playing the game. The more you play it the more you learn,” LaFleur said. "He’s playing fast, he’s playing at a high level. He’s going a great job fundamentally, just getting off the football, playing with his hands, defeating blocks.”
