The Green Bay Packers could be active in acquiring a running back as star Josh Jacobs faces an ongoing investigation into domestic violence charges.

Jacobs has denied the allegations and has been released from jail while the investigation continues.

Although the situation doesn't have an outcome, Green Bay should look to add another running back regardless.

Even if Jacobs is on the field, running back was their weakest position, relying on MarShawn Lloyd, Pierre Strong Jr., and Chris Brooks. 

Lloyd was the Packers' third-round pick in 2024, but he has struggled with injury issues. He has appeared in one game in his NFL career, rushing for 15 yards on six carries with one reception for three yards.

If Lloyd is healthy, he could be impactful as a speedy running back for Green Bay. Brooks is impactful due to his great pass blocking. In the 2025 season, he rushed for 105 yards on 27 attempts, along with 13 receptions for 91 yards.

Strong Jr. hasn't shown starting running back potential, as he hasn't had a rushing attempt in a game since 2024. In his career, he has rushed for 499 yards and two touchdowns on 99 carries with 26 receptions for 193 yards.

With the current running back room, Green Bay will need to make an addition via a trade or in free agency, and there are some solid options to target.

The Arizona Cardinals have the most depth at running back in the NFL. They used the third overall pick to select Jeremiyah Love, pairing him with free agency addition Tyler Allgeier. Arizona also has two-time Pro Bowler James Conner and Trey Benson on the roster.

Conner could be the odd man out and an ideal target for the Packers. The 31-year-old is under contract for the 2026 season, making $3 million. 

Conner had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2023 and 2024, but only appeared in three games in 2025, as he suffered a season-ending foot injury.

If he is able to stay on the field, he could be a productive running back for Green Bay in the 2026 season.

Joe Mixon would be the biggest upside swing for Green Bay at running back. When healthy, Mixon has proven to be one of the best players at his position.

However, he suffered a freak foot injury before the 2025 season, which sidelined him for the entire season and led to his release by the Houston Texans earlier this offseason.

Mixon played at a high level for the Texans in 2024, rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns, and catching 36 passes for 309 yards and a touchdown.

The 29-year-old would be the best option for Green Bay if he can pass a physical.

Another option that the Packers could pursue in a trade is San Francisco 49ers running back Isaac Guerendo. 

Guerendo had a solid rookie year for San Francisco in 2024, rushing for 420 yards and four touchdowns on 84 carries, along with 15 receptions for 152 yards.

In the 2025 season, Guerendo did not have a single rushing attempt, as he was behind Christian McCaffrey and Brian Robinson Jr. in the depth chart.

While Guerendo wouldn't be a major addition, he could be an upgrade to the running back room.

Najee Harris is another potential swing for Green Bay to take in free agency at running back. 

The 28-year-old started his career with four-straight 1,000-yard seasons, but only played in three games in 2025, as he suffered a torn Achilles.

If Harris is healthy, he could be worth a look for the Packers.

Braelon Allen is a talented young running back who was a fourth-round pick by the New York Jets in 2024.

The 22-year-old is behind Breece Hall in the Jets backfield. Hall just inked a three-year, $43.5 million extension.

Allen only appeared in four games in 2025 as he suffered a sprained MCL. He rushed for 334 yards and two touchdowns on 92 carries while hauling in 19 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown in the 2024 season.

New York likely isn't shopping Allen, but with Hall's extension and their status as a rebuilding team, Green Bay could call with an offer.

The Packers are in need of more depth at running back, and if Jacobs is out, it will become even more pressing.
