Dontayvion Wicks flashes talent but lacks consistency. Is his high ceiling worth sacrificing for draft capital elsewhere? The Green Bay Packers face a tough roster decision.

One has to wonder about the true value wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks adds for the Green Bay Packers.

At times, he looks like he has the upside to be a top wide receiver in this league.

Wicks, checking in at 6-foot-1, 206 pounds, is a great route-runner who excels at getting open.

In three seasons, he's caught 108 passes for 1,328 yards and 11 touchdowns. That's good production for a fifth-round draft pick (2023 NFL Draft) out of Virginia. You'll take a guy like that on your depth chart in a heartbeat.

That's undoubtedly why the Packers like Wicks. He's got a high ceiling and a decent floor as a player. Let's not forget about his six catch, 94-yard, and two-touchdown explosion against the Detroit Lions last season.

The problem with Wicks is consistency. That game, on Thanksgiving, was the only time he found the end zone in 2025. Those six catches were his biggest total of the season as well. Having played in 14 games, he averaged just two catches per game.

Again, Wicks is perfectly good as a depth player. He's a strong WR4 who can moonlight as a WR3 in certain situations.

Do the Packers need Wicks on the roster in 2026, though? The answer to that question is unequivocally no.

Christian Watson will have a full season healthy (hopefully). Matthew Golden needs more targets, and he's going to compete with Jayden Reed to be Green Bay's WR2 in 2026.

Savion Williams is a former third-round pick who is going to need some touches, and even though free agent pickup Skyy Moore is a special teams acquisition, he's going to be someone who will certainly get touches in head coach Matt LaFleur's scheme because of his speed.

What that means is that Wicks isn't necessarily needed for the Packers in 2026, but he could bring immense value to them as a trade piece.

ESPN's Rich Cimini believes the New York Jets are looking for a veteran wideout this season and he mentioned Wicks as a potential trade option for them.

If that's really the case, general manager Brian Gutekunst should run to the phone to call the Jets about a trade for Wicks.

In a 2026 draft in which the Packers are low on selections due to the Micah Parsons trade, even getting a mid-to-late round pick for Wicks would be an immense value for the Pack. Heck, the Jets have four picks in the Top 50 in the draft. Perhaps Gutekunst can find a way to package Wicks with someone or something else to try to get even their No. 44 overall pick.

That would give the Packers No. 44 and No. 52 in the second round, and with massive needs at cornerback and on the defensive line, Gutekunst could really start to plug some holes on what should be a Super Bowl roster.

There really are no needs at wide receiver, though. At least not immediately.

With that in mind, Wicks is expendable for the Packers, especially if they can get something decent back in return.
