Getting to Know New Green Bay Packers’ Defensive Coach Daniel Bullocks cover image

The Green Bay Packers land experienced coach Daniel Bullocks, who brings nearly a decade of high-level defensive knowledge along with him.

The Green Bay Packers continue to fill out their new defensive staff.

At the head is, of course, Jonathan Gannon. The former Arizona Cardinals head coach failed to run his own ship over the past few seasons in the desert, but the Packers have every reason to believe he can be the real deal as a defensive coordinator.

The biggest reason for that? When he was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, they went to the Super Bowl.

Gannon is putting together what looks like an elite staff, highlighted by former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich as the new passing game coordinator, and he just added another intriguing name.

That would be Daniel Bullocks, who has been a mainstay for the San Francisco 49ers for nearly the past 10 seasons.

Bullocks is 42 years old and from Chattanooga, Tennessee.

He played college football at Nebraska from 2001 to 2005 and was a second-round draft selection in the 2006 NFL Draft. A safety, he went No. 40 overall to the Detroit Lions.

Bullocks had a short three-season NFL career. He played in 31 games total, starting 21 of those contests.

He then got into coaching in 2012, starting as a defensive backs coach at Northern Iowa.

After two seasons at UNI, Bullocks was the cornerbacks coach for Eastern Michigan in 2015 before jumping to the NFL in 2016 as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Bullocks stayed in Jacksonville for a season and then wound up in San Francisco in the same role for two seasons. He was promoted to safeties coach in 2019 and has held that position with the 49ers ever since. He's also been the defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator for the last three seasons.

For those keeping track, this is yet another assistant coach on the defensive staff with plenty of great experience.

Bullocks isn't a defensive coordinator like Babbich or new linebackers coach Sam Siefkes (who was the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech), but he's been coaching for a high-level defense for almost a decade now. He's also been a part of a ton of big games with the 49ers. That includes two trips to the Super Bowl and multiple trips to the NFC Championship game.

The keyword of this offseason for the new defensive staff has been "experience", and Bullocks has all of the right kind of it.

He's going to be a nice addition for the Packers.
