The Green Bay Packers will endeavor to move on through the rest of the 2025 NFL season without the services of Tucker Kraft. That's going to be easier said than done, because Kraft was on an All-Pro trajectory before a fluke ACL tear in Week 9 against the Carolina Panthers took him out of commission for the rest of the season -- if not longer.
It's a tough break for the Packers, to say the least. That's how life in the NFL goes, though, and certainly, none of Green Bay's remaining opponents will feel bad about it.
You play with the players you've got, and the Packers have had to make some adjustments in the wake of Kraft's injury.
First and foremost will be the elevation for former second round pick Luke Musgrave from TE2 to TE1, and there's reason to believe that he can pick up right where Kraft left off. He won't be an All-Pro, but he has a high ceiling that the Packers will want to take advantage of.
In the meantime, the Pack made some tight end-centric moves to the back end of the roster. Tight end Josh Whyle was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man and the Packers signed a tight end named McCallan Castles to the practice squad.
Let's get to know each player a bit.
If you had to bet on one of these tight ends to find the end zone over the rest of the 2025 season, Whyle would be the one.
Sure, he's being elevated from the practice squad, so it's not like he's some major signing in light of Kraft's injury. With that said, he does have some NFL experience. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. Ironically, both Musgrave and Kraft were selected in that draft.
Over two seasons with multiple starts in Tennessee, the 6-foot-7, 248 pound tight end caught 37 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. That's a 9.2 yards per catch average.
“I love Josh,” Titans quarterback Will Levis had said before the 2024 season. “He’s a juice guy that we have on this team, and it's been cool to see him come out of his shell and to be a fun presence in this locker room. He works his tail off. He is prepared every day."
A juice guy who has found the end zone twice in actual NFL play? You could promote far worse off the practice squad.
Castles doesn't sound like a real person, even, but rest assured, he is.
He checks in at 6-foot-4, 244 pounds and he's an undrafted free agent tight end out of the University of Tennessee.
Castles originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2024 NFL Draft. He hopped aboard the Los Angeles Chargers' practice squad before the 2024 season but was released in training camp ahead of this 2025 season. He then caught on with the Los Angeles Rams in training camp but didn't make the team or the practice squad.
The Packers have now picked him up, and he's at the very least a body for the practice squad who had some decent looks in college.
He played six collegiate seasons between stints at Cal (2018-19), UC Davis (2020-22) and Tennessee (2023). Castles notched 92 catches for 1,266 yards and 14 touchdowns in his 46 collegiate games with 24 starts.
If he ends up on the 53-man roster the Packers may be in trouble, but for now, he's at least found a home and a role in Green Bay.
