The Green Bay Packers re-signed running back Chris Brooks on a two-year deal on Wednesday.
The deal is worth $4.85 million, which is a cheap deal for the Packers. Brooks is very valuable to Green Bay's offense.
In the 2025 season, he rushed for 106 yards on 27 carries while hauling in 13 receptions for 91 yards.
His stats don't reflect the impact he has on the Packers' offense. Brooks is an elite pass blocker at the running back position, often making key blocks to give Jordan Love more time to deliver downfield in must-pass situations.
Brooks was a key free agent for Green Bay, as his impact on the offense often goes unnoticed but is pivotal to the success of the passing attack.
Love put together his best season in 2025, completing 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,381 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Love thrived when he had a clean pocket and was also efficient against the blitz, both of which speak to the importance of having a running back like Brooks in pass protection.
Josh Jacobs will continue to be the lead back for Green Bay in 2026. Jacobs appeared in 15 games in the 2025 season, rushing for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added 36 receptions for 282 yards and a touchdown in the receiving game.
With Jacobs and Brooks in place, the Packers could still look to add another running back via free agency or the draft.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn ImagesWhile Brooks plays a key role for Green Bay, he isn't utilized as their second back behind Jacobs.
Emanuel Wilson held that role in 2025, rushing for 496 yards and three touchdowns, while catching 15 passes for 99 yards. He was solid in his role, but he is a free agent, and it's unlikely he'll return.
Ideally, the Packers would turn to 2024 third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd for this role. However, Lloyd has been unable to stay healthy in the NFL. He has only played one game over his two seasons in Green Bay.
With Brooks and Jacobs solidified on the depth chart, the Packers will look to add one more running back to complete the room.
