As the Green Bay Packers’ receiving hierarchy takes shape, quarterback Jordan Love is challenging second-year wideout Savion Williams to transform his raw athletic tools into consistent on-field production for 2026.
There's been a ton of proverbial ink spilled on the Green Bay Packers' wide receiver room this offseason.
And to be fair, it has been warranted. The Packers have made huge investments in their wide receivers recently. Jayden Reed got a three-year, $50.25 million contract extension. That was followed up a few weeks later with a four-year, $110.5 million contract extension for Christian Watson.
Those were two big-money deals this offseason, but let's not forget that the Packers also spent their 2025 first-round pick on a wide receiver in Matthew Golden. Not only was Golden the first wideout the Packers had selected in the first round since Javon Walker in 2002, but he's more than likely going to be their only first-round pick in a few years.
The Packers didn't have a first-rounder in their last draft, and they aren't expecting to have one in the 2027 draft either because of the Micah Parsons trade.
These wide receiver investments have created a clear pecking order in the offense. Not factoring in Tucker Kraft, who can be a legitimate superstar receiving tight end, the Packers will roll with Watson and Golden on the outsides and Reed as the slot receiver in 2026.
There's still more talent on this team, though, and if we know anything about Matt LaFleur as a head coach and offensive coordinator, it's that he'll try to get all different types of players involved in the offense.
One of the players who has been forgotten about on the depth chart this offseason is wideout Savion Williams. Drafted in the third round in 2025 as a "gadget player" out of TCU, it's worth noting that quarterback Jordan Love believes that Williams can be more than just an occasional tool that LaFleur can throw out there when he's trying to get different looks.
In fact, Love is expecting a big improvement for Williams as he enters his second NFL season.
"I wanna see Savion Williams. He's gonna be another guy who's gonna have that year two jump," Love recently told the media. "I think for him, it's just getting those reps and feeling more comfortable and confident with everything he does and just knowing the offense inside and out."
Williams caught just 10 passes for 78 yards as a rookie but he did get his first NFL touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers in late October.
He's got great size at 6-foot-4, 222-pounds. He's got good speed and great athleticism. Can he put it all together to be more than just a "toolsy" NFL prospect.
In his typical affable way, Love is putting pressure on Williams (whether he knows it or not) to figure it out, because he wants to see the former third round pick make some more plays in 2026.
"Once he gets more comfortable on the field and gets some opportunities, he can make some plays for us as well, so I'm excited for him," Love said of Williams.
