Green Bay Packers Linked to Former First Round Pick CB in Free Agency cover image

The Green Bay Packers could add a talented cornerback in free agency.

The Green Bay Packers had a disappointing end to the 2025 season, losing to the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card Round. The season was promising, as Green Bay started 9-3-1 before superstar Micah Parsons went down with a torn ACL.

The Packers did not win a game after Parsons suffered his injury. While Green Bay has a talented roster, there are some holes to address.

The cornerback room is perhaps the biggest position of need. Javon Bullard played at a high level as the nickel, but Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon were inconsistent on the outside.

Green Bay tried to address cornerback in the 2025 offseason, inking Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million deal. However, Hobbs did not live up to his contract, struggling on the field and dealing with injuries.

With the cornerback position as a need, Matt Bowen of ESPN named the Packers as the best fit for free agent cornerback Greg Newsome II.

"New defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will implement a heavy zone scheme. That's a fit for Newsome, who uses his backfield vision in coverage," Bowen wrote.

Newsome was a first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent time with the Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2025 season and had 52 total tackles, two tackles for loss, nine pass deflections, and an interception.

He would be a great addition for the Packers, as he would fit Gannon's scheme and become their top cornerback.

However, Newsome is one of the top cornerbacks on the market, so Green Bay will have competition to bring him in.

To create some cap space to operate this offseason, the Packers will have to be creative. Rashan Gary and Elgton Jenkins are cut candidates, as they both struggled in 2025 and did not live up to their contracts.

The Packers can also look to restructure other deals and let some free agents walk, such as Romeo Doubs and Rasheed Walker.

Brian Gutekunst and Green Bay's front office need to be active this offseason, and landing Newsome in free agency would be a homerun signing.
