The Green Bay Packers are overhauling their special teams this offseason.
Yes, they were sort of forced into it. Rich Bisaccia has been the special teams coordinator and assistant head coach for the past few seasons, but he randomly left the team a few weeks ago. He's now the special teams coordinator for the Clemson Tigers.
The Packers did some searching and brought in the architect of a former top-ranked special teams unit for the New England Patriots.
The Packers hired Cam Achord, and there is reason to believe that he can be successful in Green Bay as the new special teams coordinator.
This may not be the only big change on special teams the Packers are making this offseason, though.
Easton Butler of Packer Report is reporting that Green Bay has been in contract with the reps for kicker Brandon Aubrey.
"Aubrey is expected to command the largest deal for a Kicker in NFL History, and with his reps also at the Combine, he could be kicking somewhere other than Jerry's World in 2026," Butler wrote.
Aubrey, 30, has been with the Dallas Cowboys over the past three seasons, and he's been one of the premier kickers in the NFL during that time.
He's made 88.2% of his kicks during his NFL career, which only came about because he became a star kicker for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.
In fact, Aubrey is a former professional soccer player. He played college soccer at Notre Dame and then played a few seasons in MLS.
Aubrey retired from soccer and was working as a software engineer when he decided to give football a try after watching the NFL and thinking, "I could do that".
Last season, he made 36-of-42 field goals, and though he was a bit choppy from 50-plus (11-of-17), he did punch in a long field goal of 64 yards.
In his rookie season (2023), Aubrey hit his first 31 field goal attempts. He punched in a 65-yarder in 2024, a Dallas record, and he holds the NFL record for most 50-yard-plus kicks made in a single season.
Aubrey can get it done when it comes to volume as well as distance. He would be a massive weapon for the Packers if they could get him.
Can they afford him, though? That's the biggest question. They'd also have to release Brandon McManus, but they can do that and save $1.9 million against the cap in the process.
Spotrac believes Aubrey is worth a four-year, $26 million deal on the open market.
