Green Bay Packers special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia made a stunning decision.

Green Bay Packers special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Rich Bisaccia is stepping down. Bisaccia has been the Packers' special teams coordinator since 2022.

Green Bay's special teams unit has struggled mightily during that time, and it was clear they needed a change. However, throughout the start of the offseason, it seemed that Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst, and the Packers were going to stick with Bisaccia.

“While we are disappointed to lose a person and coach as valuable as Rich, we respect his decision to step down from the Packers," head coach Matt LaFleur said. Rich was a tremendous resource to me and our entire coaching staff who had a profound impact on our players and our culture throughout the building. We can't thank him enough for his contributions to our team over the last four years. We wish Rich, his wife, Jeanne, and the rest of their family all the best moving forward."

By stepping down, he allows Green Bay to find a new special teams coordinator. Bisaccia has been a quality assistant coach throughout his career, including his time as the interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.

His tenure with the Packers was unsuccessful, and he will now have the chance to reset before returning to coaching.

LaFleur will need to begin the search for their next special teams coordinator, and they need to get the hire right to turn the unit around.

Green Bay consistently ranks near the bottom of the league in almost all special teams categories, and that unit could end up being the difference in making a deep playoff push and falling to a team that they should beat.

In the 2025 season alone, there are many games to point to where special teams miscues were a big reason for losing.

In Week 3, the Packers fell to the Cleveland Browns, having a field goal blocked that would've given them a lead late in the fourth quarter.

They also had special teams mistakes against the Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers, and Philadelphia Eagles. Most notably, in their games against the Chicago Bears, Green Bay failed to recover an onside kick in Week 16, and kicker Brandon McManus missed two field goals and an extra point in the Wild Card matchup.

These mistakes certainly aren't all on Bisaccia, but it's evident that the Packers needed a new voice in the room.

Green Bay has a ton of talent on the roster, and they are in their Super Bowl window, but they can't allow the special teams errors to continue, making the hiring of their next special teams coordinator pivotal to future success.
