Green Bay Packers: Why Matt LaFleur Could Let Jeff Hafley Steal a Coach cover image

The Green Bay Packers could lose another coach, who would follow former colleagues to the Miami Dolphins. Matt LaFleur might even greenlight the lateral move, opening doors for new offensive ideas in Green Bay.

The Green Bay Packers have lost two major pieces of the puzzle to the Miami Dolphins this offseason.

The first was their Vice President of Player Personnel, Jon-Eric Sullivan, who became the Dolphins' new General Manager.

Sullivan's first big move on the job was to poach Green Bay defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, bringing him down to Miami to be the new head coach.

Both Sullivan and Hafley were effusive in their praise of the Packers as well as head coach Matt LaFleur in their opening statements to the Miami media the other day, but could they be considering taking another member of the Packers' ranks?

NFL insider Albert Breer believes Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich could be a target for Hafley and Sullivan as they look to build their new coaching staff. Moreover, despite the fact that it would be a lateral move, Breer can see LaFleur letting Stenavich go down to Miami.

"As far as candidates [for offensive coordinator], I’d start with Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, who’s been with Matt LaFleur since he arrived in Green Bay, and the coordinator for four years—I think LaFleur might let the 42-year-old pursue a job elsewhere to call plays," Breer recently wrote.

As Breer Mentioned, Stenavich has been with the Packers since 2019, so he's been a part of LaFleur's whole run. He started as the offensive line coach, and in 2021, he also became the run game coordinator. LaFleur promoted Stenavich to offensive coordinator in 2022, though he doesn't call plays, and he's held that position for the past few seasons.

So why would LaFleur willingly let Stenavich go to Miami?

First, he is a fair coach and all indications are that he treats his staff well. If Miami calls and asks Stenavich to call plays, it would be an opportunity that he doesn't have in Green Bay, and LaFleur is definitely the type of head coach to let his guy go chase an opportunity.

There's also the fact that LaFleur may be considering getting rid of Stenavich anyhow. We know he's evaluating his staff now that he's been given an extension, and significant changes have to be made if LaFleur wants to get the Packers over the hump. At this point, that's the expectation.

Perhaps bringing in a new offensive coordinator with fresh ideas could help LaFleur as both a head coach and play-caller. Perhaps bringing an old name back into the fold at offensive coordinator, like Nathaniel Hackett, could also be a good idea for LaFleur. Hackett was with the organization this past season as a defensive consultant, helping the defense see things from an offensive perspective.

LaFleur and Hackett had a great working relationship from 2019 to 2021, and Hackett orchestrated one of the best red zone offenses in the NFL in his time as offensive coordinator for the Packers.

It's an idea. There may be better ideas out there, but it's an idea nonetheless.

Either way, the days of Stenavich helping run the offense in Green Bay could be coming to an end.
