Green Bay Packers Will Regret Letting Sean Mannion Go to Philadelphia Eagles cover image

The Green Bay Packers lose a rising star coach to the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator role. Will they regret parting ways with him? It seems likely.

Sean Mannion has earned himself a big-time opportunity. After spending the past few seasons coaching quarterbacks for the Green Bay Packers and learning under perhaps one of the best to do it in Tom Clements, Mannion has gotten a promotion.

Unfortunately, though, the promotion did not come from the Packers. Unfortunate for the Packers, that is.

After interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles for their vacant offensive coordinator position, Mannion has been hired by Nick Sirianni.

He'll be replacing Kevin Patullo, who was fired by Sirianni two days after the Eagles' playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Patullo had called plays for Philly for just one season before losing his job.

Mannion will undoubtedly be in a pressure cooker as someone who has swiftly climbed the ladder from offensive assistant (2024) to quarterbacks coach (2025) to offensive coordinator.

Good luck to him with that, but it's the Packers who may need luck when it comes to replacing the up-and-coming superstar coach.

Frankly, with how people "in the know" in Green Bay talked about Mannion, a former NFL quarterback, it's extremely surprising the Packers let him walk out the door without a fight.

"The Packers think he's a future head coach. They love him," Peter Bukowski of LockedOn Packers told Chase Senior of Chat Sports. "Tom Clements was the QB Yoda in Green Bay forever. One of the best QB coaches of the modern era. Mannion was the hand-picked successor. He hasn't been coaching long, that's the only thing. He's a really bright young coach."

Of course, this could be a bit of hyperbole from Bukowski regarding Mannion, but he's far from the only reporter who has suggested that the Packers believed their quarterbacks coach was a rising star.

With that in mind, and especailly with the offensive coaching staff in need of a shakeup, it doesn't make a ton of sense that Green Bay let Mannion walk.

The Packers could have easily moved on from Adam Stenavich and promoted Mannion within the ranks, and not a single soul would have batted an eye. In fact, most in the know would have praised that move.

That's what you do with rising stars, right? You keep them in-house.

That rising star is now coaching in Philly, instead of helping Matt LaFleur and the Packers get over the hump. In fact, he's going to be standing in the way of LaFleur and the Packers from here on out.
