There's an old adage in football that goes like this: If you've got two quarterbacks, you've really got none. The idea behind that is that if there's not one quarterback you trust so much that you have to use two during a game, you're already in trouble before you realize it.
The same can be said for kickers, apparently. At least that's the case for the Green Bay Packers.
Brandon McManus was signed mid-season in 2024 and ended up being a revelation for the Packers. As they struggled to find kicking consistency in the post-Mason Crosby era, McManus came aboard in October, and he finished the season completing 20-of-21 field goals and 30-of-30 extra points.
The Packers re-signed him in the offseason and it seemed like "all systems go", but then he injured his quad early in the season and had to miss games. The Pack signed Lucas Havrisik to replace him while he was injured and Havrisik's very first impression with the team was kicking a franchise-record 61-yard field goal against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Packers immediately brought McManus back, but he kicked injured for a few weeks, though neither he nor head coach Matt LaFleur wanted to admit it. The damn apparently broke ahead of the game against the New York Giants last weekend, because McManus was deactvated 24 hours before the game.
Havrisik got the call, and yes it was very windy at MetLife, but he missed three extra point tries and the field goal operation looked sloppy.
It's been a mess, and the complete opposite of the Crosby era, which was as consistent as they come. Speaking of, the Packers' old kicker discussed this situation on his show, and he essentially called his old team out for their inconsistencies in dealing with this kicking problem.
"I've heard out in the media space where everyone is kind of trying to tiptoe around, like, wind was there, weather's bad, but what is going on?" Crosby said (h/t LombardiAve). "For me, I'm like, so McManus couldn't go in the game but he's OK two or three days later? What is going on up there? In my mind, I'm grasping at straws."
While injuries and wind are absolutely a thing, the long and short of it is that LaFleur and special teams coach Rich Bisaccia have been extremely inconsistent in their handling of the kicker.
They seemingly rushed McManus back, which may have exacerbated his injury. In the meantime, if the wind wasn't the only reason Havrisik looked so bad last weekend, they very well could have also ruined their ace backup's confidence in the process.
Special teams ahs been a mess under Bisaccia, who was brought in specifically because of his ability to coach special teams at a high level. If he can't do that, what can he do for the Packers?
He won't be fired in season, because LaFleur is far too loyal to do that, but if the Pack can't figure this situation out quickly, the kicking game will surely doom them. It's also played a major factor in all of their losses this season, and it very well could be the difference between making a run in the playoffs and coming home early.
Crosby is right to call this out, because it's a mess.
