NFL Makes Major Decision on Packers Star RB Josh Jacobs

The Green Bay Packers received a disappointing update on Sunday as star running back Josh Jacobs was placed on the Commissioner Exempt List. Jacobs was formally charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

This is a major loss for the Packers offense, as Jacobs was clearly their top running back. In the 2025 season, he rushed for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns while hauling in 36 receptions for 282 yards and a touchdown.

Jacobs played at an even higher level in his first season in Green Bay in 2024, rushing for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns, along with 36 receptions for 342 yards and a touchdown.

The 28-year-old running back will now be unable to play for the Packers until he is removed from the Commissioner Exempt List. This development led to Green Bay acquiring former third-round pick Kaleb Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Johnson will be a quality piece in the running back room along with MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks. Johnson didn't have a great rookie year with the Steelers, rushing for 69 yards on 28 carries while catching one pass for nine yards. 

However, in a new situation where the Packers will need an impactful rusher, Johnson could have plenty of time on the field.

The 23-year-old had an incredible 2024 season at Iowa, earning All-American honors, rushing for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns, and adding 22 receptions for 188 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Green Bay will look for Johnson to find his form from college and be a lead rusher for the offense. Lloyd could also be a feature back for the Packers, but he has struggled to stay on the field, only appearing in one game in his first two seasons.

Rounding out the running back room is Chris Brooks, who serves as the pass blocker for Green Bay. In his two seasons with the Packers, Brooks has rushed for 289 yards and a touchdown on 63 carries while catching 24 receptions for 160 yards.

Although Green Bay has added Johnson to the roster, they will sorely miss Jacobs' absence and will need to lean heavily on the passing attack.
