After losing key veterans, the Green Bay Packers gamble on former second-round pick Skyy Moore to ignite their return game and add explosive versatility to Matt LaFleur’s young offense.
As a consequence of drafting and developing wide receiver talent, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur lost two key players for the offense this offseason that had been staples.
Because of cap space, the Packers traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles and let Romeo Doubs walk to the New England Patriots in free agency. Green Bay will count on Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Matthew Golden to have a good year.
The Packers took a chance on Skyy Moore, who showed a lot of promise before the Kansas City Chiefs drafted him in the second round of the 2022 draft.
Moore struggled during his time in Kansas City, finishing with 48 receptions for 581 yards and one touchdown. He had three fumbles as a returner in his rookie season but averaged 21.5 yards per return in 2024 and 20.7 yards per return last season.
When speaking to reporters on Thursday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said he thinks Moore will make the 53-man roster. LaFleur has been impressed with the abilities Moore has shown in training camp.
"He's going to help as a returner and a receiver," Gutekunst said, via Zach Jacobson. "He does a lot of the things offensively that Matt [LaFleur] asks of those guys, particularly out of the slot.
"He's a proven punt and kick returner. I expect him to be a part of our squad moving forward."
Following his trade to the San Francisco 49ers last season, Moore said he needed a change of scenery.
“Yeah, I feel like I definitely needed a fresh start,” Moore said. “I found myself in my head a lot over in Kansas City. And, you know, that's never good.
"I feel like today, it was just, like, let it loose and just go out and play because I don't know anything anyway. So it's like, I got to just play ball.”
The Packers signed Moore to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. It could wind up being a sweet deal for Green Bay if he's able to be the main returner for the team and help out on offense.
Moore recorded 1,198 yards returning for San Francisco last season. He's a speedy receiver, and there's a good possibility LaFleur can help him become more of a threat on offense.
