Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has been cleared from concussion protocol, but Clayton Tune will be the starter in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings.
That means that Green Bay is allowing Love and the starters to rest ahead of the playoffs, as well as backup quarterback Malik Willis, who has been dealing with shoulder and hamstring injuries.
Tune came in for Willis in the Packers' Week 17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He completed 1 of 4 passes for eight yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. The interception came on a pass off the hands of wide receiver Bo Melton.
Tune's only career start came with the Arizona Cardinals in his rookie season in 2023. In that game, he completed 11 of 20 passes for 58 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. He added 28 yards on five carries on the ground.
The backup quarterback against Minnesota has yet to be determined, but they did sign former third-round pick Desmond Ridder to the practice squad.
Green Bay has been ravaged by injuries, making LaFleur's decision to rest the starters an easy one. However, if the Packers lose to the Vikings, they will enter the Wild Card Round on a four-game losing streak.
Going into the playoffs, that cold could be a problem for the Packers. They will face either the Chicago Bears or the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, depending on the outcome of the Week 18 games.
Green Bay has lost to both of those teams this season, and it will be pivotal to come out sharp despite the starters not playing the week prior.
Love was having a great season prior to suffering a concussion against the Bears in Week 16. On the season, he has completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,381 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He has also rushed for 199 yards on 47 attempts.
It will be up to Tune to lead the Packers to a win in Week 18 and build momentum as they head into the postseason. While resting the starters hasn't always been an effective strategy, it's a no-brainer for Green Bay with all of their injuries.
