The Miami Dolphins are hiring Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their next head coach. Miami hired Jon-Eric Sullivan as their general manager earlier in the offseason, after spending time in Green Bay's front office from 2004 to 2025.
Sullivan most recently served as the Packers' vice president of player personnel from 2022 to 2025.
Sullivan is now bringing Hafley with him to Miami. Hafley was Green Bay's defensive coordinator over the last two seasons and did a quality job.
He has prior experience as a head coach, serving in that role at Boston College from 2020 to 2023. He is taking over for Mike McDaniel, who Miami fired earlier this offseason.
With Hafley on his way to the Dolphins, head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst will need to get to work to find their next defensive coordinator.
Prior to having Hafley as the defensive coordinator over the past two years, LaFleur didn't have success with hiring a defensive play caller, with Mike Pettine and Joe Barry.
It is pivotal for LaFleur to get the hire right at defensive coordinator to replace Hafley, who helped the Packers have a great defense.
Green Bay has some talented players on defense, including superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons, a talented safety combination of Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams. They also have defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.
Whoever inherits the defense has a chance to keep it among the top units in the league, but they need to improve their cornerback room.
While Javon Bullard played well as the nickel, the outside cornerbacks of Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon were inconsistent. The free agent signing of Nate Hobbs on a four-year, $48 million deal didn't pan out, as he struggled at outside cornerback.
They even claimed former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs at the end of the season, but he only played one snap for the Packers in the postseason.
Hafley proved he is a great coach during his two years as Green Bay's defensive coordinator, and as he becomes the next head coach of the Dolphins, LaFleur will need to do a great job replacing him.
