The defense for the Packers is expected to be very good again, even with Micah Parsons out for the first four to five weeks of the season. But once he returns, Green Bay should be a top unit in the NFL.
But like any team, there are ways for the Packers to get even better. This could come from a potential trade, with the front office always keeping its eyes open for possible options.
NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report put together a list of trade candidates entering the new season. Within the list, the Packers were mentioned as a landing spot for Pro Bowl edge rusher Josh Sweat from the Arizona Cardinals.
There have been rumors that Sweat has been seeking a way out of the Cardinals, and the Packers could be a good landing spot. Sweat has been an excellent defensive player for Arizona, but he could be getting frustrated with the direction that the franchise is going.
Last season, Sweat played in 17 games for Arizona, recording 30 total tackles, 12.0 sacks, and four forced fumbles. Sweat signed a four-year, $76.4 million deal with the Cardinals before last season.
Adding Sweat to the Packers' defense could be special, especially due to his familiarity with coordinator Jonathan Gannon. Gannon was the Cardinals' head coach last season, so he could always try to recruit Sweat to Green Bay.
Halting some thought of a trade, ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano reported that Arizona wasn't looking to move Sweat. But teams say things like this all the time, only to then turn around to trade the player.
"The Cardinals are telling interested teams they aren't planning to trade Sweat, and I believe that to be true," Graziano wrote.
If Sweat is available, the Packers should be all over this trade. Sweat could bring more dominance to the already strong unit, giving Green Bay more firepower for the upcoming season.
Green Bay will open the new season on the road against the NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings, giving them a chance to make an early-season statement.
