Tyrod Taylor transitions into a mentorship role, offering a seasoned perspective to help Jordan Love navigate the pressures of a high-stakes championship pursuit.

Tyrod Taylor knows the Green Bay Packers brought him in to do a very specific job.

If he's called into action, that means something bad has happened to starting quarterback Jordan Love. The Packers believe Love is their franchise quarterback and they paid him like a franchise quarterback not too long ago.

When he's at the top of his game, he has the talent to be a Top 5 quarterback in the NFL. Alongside Micah Parsons, he gives the Packers the best chance to win a Super Bowl.

What that means is that if No. 6 (Taylor) is in at quarterback during the regular season, nobody is going to be happy or excited.

That's a tough job, but that's life as a backup quarterback in the NFL.

Taylor is there to support Love more than anything else, so he's spending time in OTAs getting to know the former first-round pick out of Utah State.

“We didn’t know each other coming into this opportunity,” Taylor recently explained to the media. “We had a lot of respect for one another. Always talked pregame. But this is our first time working alongside one another. It’s about learning one another for sure.”

Taylor is about to turn 37 years old. He's been in the league since 2011 and has become one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league. He's a veteran and has 62 starts under his belt. You can't ask for a better backup option.

He also knows what his primary responsibility is for Green Bay.

“We’re each other’s eyes when we’re not on the field,” Taylor explained of his relationship with Love. “Whether it’s looking for certain things while he’s on the field that he may not be able to see before he gets the tablet in his hands. Just keeping the communication as open as possible. Some people love more talkers on the sideline. Some people want things to be quiet. It’s about learning one another.”

Ultimately, the Packers don't want to see Taylor on the field. Again, that would mean something has gone wrong with Love, the $55 million AAV quarterback.

They'll be more than happy to see Taylor down on the sideline holding the clipboard, though. If he's supposed to be Love's eyes off the field, you can't ask for a more valuable set of eyes for $1.3 million in base salary in 2026.
