Miami bolsters its depth by reuniting former Ohio State standout Kyle McCord with coach Jeff Hafley, marking the second Green Bay passer to join the Dolphins' backfield.
The Green Bay Packers lost backup quarterback Malik Willis to the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
That move made sense with former Jon-Eric Sullivan leaving the Packers to become the general manager of the Dolphins and Jeff Hafley becoming their head coach.
On Sunday, the Packers traded quarterback Kyle McCord to the Dolphins for a 2028 sixth-round pick, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"Trade: Packers are sending QB Kyle McCord to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2028 6th-round pick, per sources," Schefter posted on X.
"After trading Quinn Ewers to the Jaguars, the Dolphins needed a new backup for Malik Willis. Now the Dolphins have two former Packers QBs."
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated provided an interesting note on the trade, as Hafley has some familiarity with McCord via Ohio State.
"Kyle McCord replacing Quinn Ewers on the Dolphins roster is interesting," Breer posted on X. "The two were teammates as freshmen at Ohio State in 2021. And Ohio State's DC when McCord committed to the Buckeyes in 2019 was ... Jeff Hafley."
Earlier in the preseason, McCord said his goal was to find a spot on a team for the regular season, though he wasn't sure where that would be.
"One thing about the NFL is you really never know what's going to happen next," McCord said, via the Packers. "Obviously getting drafted to Philly last year, you think you're going to spend four years there and then, boom, end up in Green Bay a year later.
"I think the thing is to continue to put your head down and keep working, and that ultimately leads you to success and puts you exactly where you need to be."
The Packers have starting quarterback Jordan Love and a veteran backup in Tyrod Taylor still on the roster.
It remains to be seen what Green Bay will do for QB3. The Packers could sign a quarterback to the practice squad, or they could be open to trading for depth before the start of the regular season.
Several quarterbacks will be looking for a new home after Sunday's deadline to trim the roster to 53 players.
