Things are changing for the Green Bay Packers. They're not sweeping changes, like a different head coach taking the wheel for 2026 and beyond.
Many fans wanted to see head coach Matt LaFleur fired after the Packers blew their playoff game against the Chicago Bears to finish the season on a five-game losing skid.
The Packers decided to remain consistent at the top with LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst remaining in place with extensions. That doesn't mean things aren't changing within the coaching hierarchy of this team, though.
The first domino to fall was Jeff Hafley being poached by the Miami Dolphins to be their next head coach.
Hafley was a solid defensive coordinator for the Packers, so they had to make a strong hire to replace him.
Did LaFleur do that with the hiring of Jonathan Gannon?
It can be argued, just like any other staffing move, but Gannon is a former head coach, and when he was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, he helped them make a Super Bowl.
At the end of the day, you can do a lot worse than Gannon, especially when considering that LaFleur was essentially looking for a coach who could be the head coach of the defense.
Why not hire a former head coach to do just that?
This move could define the Packers' success, or lack thereof, in 2026 and beyond, but there was a tertiary move made not long after that that could be just as intriguing.
A few days after Gannon got the job, he brought in Bobby Babich to coach the secondary and be Green Bay's passing game coordinator.
Babich has been the defensive coordinator under Sean McDermott with the Buffalo Bills for the past two seasons, so you can't ask for a more exciting hire for a coach who is a few rungs down the ladder but still extremely important to the team's success.
There may be more moves coming, and we haven't even begun to talk about free agency. The Packers may have to watch some good players leave, and they may also need to make some tough cuts due to the salary cap.
