The Green Bay Packers are hiring former New England Patriots special teams coordinator Cam Achord as their next special teams coordinator.
Achord replaces Rich Bisaccia, who resigned from his role earlier this offseason. Achord spent was the Patriots' special teams coordinator from 2020 to 2023, previously working as an assistant in New England.
He most recently served as the assistant special teams coordinator for the New York Giants. The 39-year-old now enters a role that the Packers have been desperately seeking to get right.
Green Bay has had a ton of special teams issues over the past decade, particularly in the playoffs. In the 2025 season, the issues were more prevalent, prompting Bisaccia to step down.
There were many games that the Packers would've won had it not been for miscues from the special teams unit.
In Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay had a field goal attempt to take the lead blocked, allowing the Browns to kick a field goal of their own for the win. The following week, the Packers had an extra point blocked and returned for two points against the Dallas Cowboys in a game that finished in a 40-40 tie.
Green Bay had more miscues midseason in games against the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles, with missed field goal attempts.
The most notable special teams mistake in the 2025 season came in their stunning Week 16 loss to the Chicago Bears, as Romeo Doubs muffed the onside kick.
The Packers' special teams miscues and missed kicks were amplified, but they also didn't have a strong return game.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesAchord has a tall task ahead of him to improve the entire special teams unit that has consistently ranked near the bottom of the league.
Achord's experience and coming from an organization like the Patriots under Bill Belichick, who valued special teams highly, should give some hope to fans.
If Achord is able to turn around Green Bay's special teams unit, it would go a long way in their pursuit of bringing home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since the 2010 season.
