The Green Bay Packers have lost backup quarterback Malik Willis in free agency.

The Green Bay Packers are losing their backup quarterback, Malik Willis, as he is signing a three-year, $67.5 million deal with $45 million guaranteed with the Miami Dolphins.

Willis was a highly productive backup quarterback for the Packers over the last two seasons behind Jordan Love, but he played at such a high level that he has earned a starting job elsewhere.

The Dolphins have poached a ton from the Packers organization so far this offseason, with Willis at quarterback, Jeff Hafley becoming their head coach, and Jon-Eric Sullivan as their general manager.

With the coaching and front office ties to Green Bay, it made a ton of sense for Willis to follow and head down to Miami.

Willis was very productive in his two years with the Packers. In 2024, he started in two games while Love was down and played in seven, completing 40 of 54 passes (74.1 percent) for 550 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown.

In the 2025 season, Willis has completed 30 of 35 passes (85.7 percent) for 422 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He added 123 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

He was a very efficient quarterback and now joins a Dolphins roster that has some talent on offense, including wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

The Packers now need to address their backup quarterback situation to find a replacement for Willis. They could look to find one through a trade with a player like Anthony Richardson, through free agency with a player like Justin Fields, or late in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Love is the clear franchise quarterback for Green Bay, as he's locked into a four-year, $220 million deal. He is coming off his best season, completing 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,381 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

However, he has missed some games over the last couple of seasons, making a reliable backup quarterback a big position of need.

Brian Gutekunst and the Packers front office have been aggressive this offseason, and they will need to continue to do so with Willis heading to Miami.
