This would have been a great addition for the Green Bay Packers.
The Green Bay Packers will not trade for Arizona Cardinals defender Josh Sweat, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
There were some rumors going around that the Packers and Cardinals were talking about a Sweat trade.
For Arizona last season, Sweat put up 12 sacks, 20 solo tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 17 QB hits in 17 games. He's a talented player who would have been a great fit in Green Bay since no one knows when superstar Micah Parsons will return from his ACL injury.
Many people who cover the NFL believe the Packers need another proven edge rusher in Jonathan Gannon's defense. Before joining the Packers as DC, Gannon was the Cardinals' head coach from 2023 to 2025.
Parsons had a stellar first season with the Packers. He finished with 12.5 sacks, 19 solo tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 27 QB hits in 14 games.
"He's obviously a piece we're going to be mindful of when we're putting together the scheme, especially when you get to game planning," Gannon said about Parsons.
One of the best players in the league, Parsons made the Pro Bowl last season despite tearing his ACL against the Denver Broncos. The Penn State product has made the Pro Bowl every season of his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and Packers.
Green Bay didn't win a game after Parsons tore his ACL against the Broncos. The Chicago Bears beat the Packers in the wild-card round of the 2026 playoffs. Chicago outscored Green Bay 25-6 to win the contest. The Packers could have used Parsons, who likely would have made Caleb Williams' life more difficult.
Once Parsons is cleared by doctors to play next season, the Packers' defense will be elite again. Until then, other guys will have to step up.
"They got a lot of talent," Gannon said. "Matt and Gutey, the whole personnel side, has done a really good job. They've done a really good job in my opinion of acquiring talent. Good players. It's a good mix of some younger players, we got some vets that are some really good players. That sweet spot.
"McKinney, I think about, who's been playing forever because he's such a high-performing vet, but he's still pretty young. And then you got some guys that are younger and in their first contract that have played really good football. We should have a chance."
