2 Reasons Green Bay Packers Likely Won’t Get a Corner at 2025 NFL Trade Deadline cover image

Despite a glaring weakness at cornerback Green Bay Packers' lack of draft capital and existing talent make a deadline trade an unlikely move.

The Green Bay Packers seem to have it all. They're a definite Super Bowl contender at 5-1-1 on the season and when you look at both the offensive and defensive sides of the football, they've got stars everywhere.

On defense, there's Micah Parsons, Edgerrin Cooper, Quay Walker and Xavier McKinney. On offense, there's Jordan Love, Josh Jacobs, Tucker Kraft and Zach Tom. The Pack also have a deep wide receiver room with multiple players who can break out each and every single game.

So yes, the Pack is stacked, but you'll notice that on defense, though McKinney was mentioned as an elite part of Green Bay's secondary, there is a noticeable lack of star power at cornerback.

In fact, cornerback is an absolute weakness and lability for this team. It's the one thing that's holding Green Bay's defense back and keeping it from being the very best in the NFL.

Those paying attention knew that would be an issue coming into this season. Keisean Nixon has been a good player for the Packers, but despite his assertation that he's a CB1, he's really more of a role player than anything. If you question that, just watch his tape against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was exposed and picked on by Aaron Rodgers.

Then there's Nate Hobbs, who the Packers paid as a free agent this offseason. Hobbs had made a decent name for himself as a slot cornerback with the Las Vegas Raiders, but General Manager Brian Gutekunst felt he could be an outside cornerback and gave him a four-year, $48 million contract this offseason to come to Green Bay.

So far, Hobbs has been a disaster. So much so that he was benched for former seventh-round pick Carrington Valentine ahead of the Pittsburgh game.

And despite Valentines' late-round status, he has shown up in big spots for the Pack. He's a tough and physical cornerback who doesn't lack confidence. Valentine would be so much better in a complementary role on a defense, though, so if you're counting on him to be your CB1, you're going to be in trouble.

That breakdown of the top three corners on this team would lead even the average fan to determine that the best way forward for the Pack is to acquire a cornerback at the trade deadline.

While that is absolutely something Gutekunst may decide to do, there are two very good reasons a trade for a cornerback likely won't happen.

First, keep in mind that the Packers have already made their massive defensive move in 2025 by bringing in Micah Parsons. Alongside Kenny Clark, Gutekunst traded Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys first round picks in 2026 and 2027 and then gave Parsons a massive, four-year, $188 million contract to boot.

Why Green Bay Packers likely won't go get a corner at 2025 NFL Trade Deadline

If the Packers were looking to make a trade at the deadline, they're already down some massive assets when it comes to draft picks. Gutekunst has done a great job of loading this team up for a Super Bowl run in 2025, but he also needs to keep them solvent for continual runs over the next few seasons as well.

There's also the presence of Valentine to consider. While he's not a superstar, he is playing well above his station with the Packers. He made several nice plays against the Steelers, and even as he gave up a touchdown to Roman Wilson towards the end of the game, he showed tremendous fight and heart all throughout the contest.

It's the type of confidence from a cornerback that drew the attention of head coach, Matt LaFleur.

“C.V. got an opportunity and he went out there, and I thought he played really competitively the entire game … even on the touchdown catch, I just loved how he competed for the football," LaFleur said earlier this week, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. "I thought that was big time, and it didn’t go our way in that moment, but I thought, all in all, he showed physicality. He was challenging guys. There was just no gimmies. And I thought that was big time because that’s how we want to play."

The lack of draft resources is absolutely a main reason why Gutekunst may not make a trade at the deadline. Valentine's play this season is the likely he reason he won't go out and get another cornerback.
