Matt LaFleur has a big problem on his hands. Not only are his Green Bay Packers now 5-3-1 after dropping two games in a row, but he's supposedly an offensive mastermind, and his offense stinks.
The Packers could manage only seven points in their Monday Night Football loss to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week. Go back to the Week 9 loss to the Carolina Panthers and it gets even more frustrating. They scored just 13 against a Panthers team that went on to lose to the New Orleans Saints in the next game, 17-7.
In sum total, this offense has scored only 20 points in two games, but it's not just that. It's how it looks.
The Packers are disjointed on offense, sloppy and mistake-prone. Against the Eagles, crossing the 50 seemed like a monumental task, let alone getting into the red zone.
And yet, on Wednesday after practice, quarterback Jordan Love revealed that he believes this unit is close to figuring it out.
"I think we're right there," Love said, according to Mike Spofford of the team website. "We're right there as an offense. It just comes down to those small details that are holding us back. But we have everything we need on offense. We've got the right players. Obviously we've got some injuries, but we've still got the right mindset. We've just got to find ways to focus more, hone in on those little details and execute."
First of all, the fact that the Packers are now nine games into the season but they're still talking about "small details" is a huge red flag.
It's a head coach's job to have small details hashed out in training camp, not in mid-November.
It's also damning that Love thinks this offense lacks focus and the ability to take care of the little details and execute. That right there is a sign of a poorly-coached unit, and though LaFleur is the head coach of the entire team, the offense is still his to manage.
One might think that a simple solution would be for LaFleur to give up the play-calling, because he clearly can't focus on this offense while also focusing on the team as whole, but he said on Wednesday that's not something he's going to do.
It doesn't sound like he's happy, though.
"As frustrated as anybody may be out there, I promise you that you're not as frustrated as I am," LaFleur said, per ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "I believe in our guys and so it's all about just finding solutions, and I can't worry what has happened in the past. ... You better have a short-term memory and you got to move on."
Moving on means finding a way to get this offense to consistently nail teh small details. Moving on means finding a way to keep them focused, no matter the opponent, and it means executing in the biggest moments.
As Love pointed out, perhaps without meaning to, those aren't things LaFleur's offense has been able to do consistently in 2025.
That's why LaFleur is under so much pressure despite the fact that the Pack still have a winning record. It's also why he may find himself out of a job at the end of this season if he can't quickly turn this thing around.
