Packers' Stubbornness With Coach Led to Their Demise cover image

The Green Bay Packers' unwillingness to make a move led to their collapse.

The Green Bay Packers had an epic collapse to the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card Round, losing 31-27.

The Packers' failure to fire special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia contributed to their collapse this season. Bisaccia is the highest-paid special teams coordinator in the league, but year after year, that unit continues to struggle.

The 2023 season ended in the Divisional Round, as a missed field goal loomed large in the loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Green Bay's 2024 playoff matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles featured multiple special teams miscues, including a fumble on the opening kickoff and a missed field goal.

In the Wild Card loss to the Bears, Brandon McManus missed two field goals and an extra point. Green Bay also allowed a big punt return, which set Chicago up with excellent field position.

Looking at the entire 2025 regular season, there were plenty of special teams mishaps that cost Green Bay games.

The Packers were in position to kick a go-ahead field goal late in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns in Week 3, but it was blocked, leading to the Browns kicking a game-winning field goal of their own.

Green Bay had an extra point blocked and returned for two points against the Dallas Cowboys in a game that ended in a 40-40 tie.

The Packers missed a 43-yard field goal in a game against the Carolina Panthers, where they lost 16-13.

In Week 16 against the Bears, the Packers muffed the onside kick, giving Chicago the chance to go on to win the game in overtime.

Green Bay also ranked last in the league in punt return average with 5.6 yards per return.

While these collapses aren't all on Bisaccia, as he's not on the field having to execute, the sheer amount of mistakes and mishaps on special teams is a fireable offense.

"That's all the stuff that we're focused on right now, going through everything, having the conversations with all our coaches and we'll determine all of that," head coach Matt LaFleur said on whether Bisaccia will be back for the 2026 season.

LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst have waited too long to fire Bisaccia, but they must cut their losses now and let him go.
